China's Record Oil Buy Fuels Brazil Export Surge
9 Apr
Summary
- China imported a record 1.6 million bpd of crude oil from Brazil in March.
- Brazil's total crude oil exports reached their second-highest level on record.
- Diesel imports into Brazil decreased by 25% in March from February.

In March, China's demand for Brazilian crude oil reached an unprecedented high, importing 1.6 million barrels per day. This record purchase significantly boosted Brazil's total crude exports, which achieved the second-highest volume ever registered. These elevated export levels are partly a response to geopolitical disruptions impacting global energy flows.
Brazil's overall crude exports in March saw a 12.4% increase from February, marking a historic high second only to March 2023. Market analysts suggest that rerouting supplies away from the Strait of Hormuz contributed to increased demand for alternative sources like Brazilian oil. India emerged as the second-largest buyer of Brazilian crude during this period.
Simultaneously, Brazil experienced a substantial decrease in diesel imports, falling by 25% in March from February levels. This reduction led to a decline in the share of U.S. diesel in the Brazilian market. Russian diesel, however, increased its presence, though its direct shipments to Brazil remained relatively stable.
