Hidden Handles Spark Massive Auto Recall in China

China has initiated its largest automotive recall to date, with nearly 4.3 million vehicles from Tesla and ten other manufacturers being recalled. The core issue involves concealed door handles that can be challenging to operate, especially if electrical systems fail after a crash.

Tesla accounts for a significant portion of this recall, affecting approximately 3 million imported and China-made Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles. The automaker will provide complimentary warning labels to identify these handles.

In response to these safety concerns, several manufacturers are also deploying software updates. These updates are designed to automatically lower vehicle windows post-collision, potentially aiding passenger escape and rescue efforts.

This recall aligns with China's broader regulatory actions. The country has announced a ban on concealed door handles, effective from 2027. New standards will require mechanical releases on both the interior and exterior of all vehicle doors, operable even without power.

The safety risk associated with these handles was highlighted by a fatal incident involving a Xiaomi sedan, where bystanders struggled to open the doors of a crashed vehicle to rescue a trapped driver. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also launched an investigation into Tesla's electronic door handles due to similar safety risks.

Tesla has indicated openness to redesigning its door handle mechanisms. The company's design head mentioned exploring a combined electronic and manual release button, a concept currently under development.
