Chennai's Second Airport: New Sites Shortlisted
6 Sep
Summary
- Two sites, Cheyyur and Gummidipoondi, are contenders.
- AAI will conduct a pre-feasibility study on chosen locations.
- Project completion is estimated to take 5-7 years.
The Tamil Nadu government has advanced plans for Chennai's second airport by shortlisting two prospective sites: Cheyyur in Chengalpattu district and Manellore in Tiruvallur district. These locations have been presented to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for a crucial pre-feasibility study.
TIDCO officials have already completed initial site inspections. Cheyyur is situated approximately 40 km from Puducherry airport, while Manellore is about 50 km from the city. Both sites present potential regulatory hurdles, including airspace clearance from the Ministry of Defence for Cheyyur.
The AAI team is expected to visit the shortlisted sites and submit its report within a few months. Despite the state government's desire to expedite the process, making the second airport operational is anticipated to require a minimum of five to seven years.
