NCDEX Introduces Weather Hedging for Chennai
1 Sep
Summary
- NCDEX launched RAINCHNNAI for Northeast Monsoon hedging.
- Contract uses a Cumulative Deviation Rainfall (CDR) model.
- Settlement is based on IMD rainfall data, not loss assessment.

The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) has introduced RAINCHNNAI, a new futures contract designed for rainfall-based weather derivatives. This contract specifically targets hedging financial exposure related to the Northeast Monsoon, a period crucial for Chennai's annual precipitation.
The RAINCHNNAI contract enables participants to manage rainfall-linked risks through a transparent, standardized, and cash-settled futures instrument. It is built upon a scientifically structured Cumulative Deviation Rainfall (CDR) model, which tracks deviations from the Long Period Average (LPA) using data from Chennai's Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam stations.
This innovative contract joins RAINMUMBAI, creating a comprehensive monsoon risk management cycle from June to December. Unlike traditional insurance, RAINCHNNAI's settlement relies solely on observed rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), ensuring operational efficiency and faster settlement cycles.
The contract features a tick size of 1 mm and a lot multiplier of ₹50 per mm, with a maximum order size of 50 lots. Trading hours are from Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 11:55 pm, with initial price limits set at 6%. Final settlement will be based on the CDR spot value on the contract's expiry day.
