Energy Bills to Drop in July: Renewables Surge
26 May
Summary
- Household bills to decrease by up to 10% starting July.
- Small business bills to see even larger reductions.
- Renewables and batteries now power nearly half of Australia.

Energy bills for households and small businesses across eastern Australia will fall by up to 10% in July, with even larger reductions for businesses. This price drop is attributed to record levels of renewables and batteries integrated into the power grid. As of the final quarter of 2025, clean energy generated over 50% of the national grid's power.
The Australian Energy Regulator has set a new default market offer for New South Wales, south-east Queensland, and South Australia, which includes enhanced customer protections and aims for better deals. Victoria has also announced a 5% cut to its default offer for households. These changes are supported by government initiatives to shield the grid from global volatility.
Australia now ranks third globally in utility-scale batteries, with a 233% increase in capacity year-on-year. Home battery uptake has also surged by 260%. However, the clean energy sector warns of a potential slowdown due to a 48% drop in new investment in wind and solar projects, influenced by inflation and regulatory hurdles.
