5 Dec
Summary
- ArcelorMittal Kent Wire consults on 85 redundancies ahead of site departure.
- Company opposed redevelopment plans approved by Medway Council.
- Challenges include low demand, Chinese competition, and US tariffs.

ArcelorMittal Kent Wire has initiated consultations regarding potential redundancies for 85 employees, signaling its impending exit from the Chatham Docks site. The company, a significant European steel manufacturer, began this process last week, citing severe business challenges as the reason for putting all jobs at risk.
The firm had been a vocal opponent of redevelopment plans for the Pier Road location, which were approved by Medway Council in May 2024. These plans include a business hub and a substantial 950-home development. Despite an unsuccessful attempt to call in the decision, the proposal faces a further judicial review.
ArcelorMittal Kent Wire has been impacted by factors including low demand, competition from China, and US tariffs. Peel Waters, the site owner, stated its commitment to delivering the redevelopment project, subject to the judicial review's outcome, while also noting efforts to find relocation solutions for existing tenants.
