Charity Fears Closure After Energy Bill Error
4 Mar
Summary
- Charity's bank account depleted by a massive energy bill error.
- Energy payments increased from £150 to over £4,700 quarterly.
- Refund process expected to take several weeks, risking closure.

The Tuebrook Hope Centre in Liverpool is at risk of closing its doors following a significant billing error by its energy provider, Total Energies. The charity's quarterly energy payments were erroneously increased by over 3,000%, jumping from around £150 to more than £4,700. This drastic increase has completely depleted the charity's available funds, leaving its manager, Steve Radford, deeply concerned about its immediate future.
Mr. Radford stated that when he contacted Total Energies about the mistake, he was informed that obtaining a refund could take up to several weeks. This prolonged delay is critical, as the charity relies on its working capital to continue offering essential services like bingo and crafts to people of all ages in the Tuebrook area. The company has since apologized, attributing the error to inflated charges based on estimated meter readings instead of actual usage.
Total Energies has committed to issuing a refund within two working days, a much faster timeline than initially communicated to the charity. They have acknowledged the distress caused by the incident and are working towards a prompt resolution. The situation highlights the vulnerability of charities and small businesses to such financial errors and the severe impact they can have.
