Logistics Giant Halts Mumbai Operations

Summary
- Challenge Group suspends Mumbai cargo flights due to Navi Mumbai airport's setup.
- Mandatory shift to Navi Mumbai airport cited for operational unreliability.
- Company seeks alternative solutions for India's international network connectivity.

Challenge Group, an international logistics firm, has announced a temporary halt to its cargo flight operations serving the Mumbai region. This suspension is effective immediately and will continue until further notice. The company cited that the present operational conditions at the Navi Mumbai airport do not permit the level of reliability and certainty required for its services.
The decision was made following a mandatory relocation of operations from the original Mumbai airport to the Navi Mumbai facility. This shift was necessitated by the upcoming demolition and reconstruction of Terminal 1 at the older airport, scheduled to begin in January. Both airports are managed by the Adani Group.
Challenge Group emphasized that while the circumstances are beyond its control, the decision to suspend services was deliberate to protect customer interests and supply chain integrity. The company is actively evaluating alternative solutions to maintain strong connectivity between India and its global network. It previously expanded its Mumbai operations in July, upgrading its Mumbai-Liège service with larger freighters.
Other airlines have also expressed concerns. Air France-KLM stated it does not plan to split its Mumbai flights between the two airports due to potential operational inefficiencies. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had previously urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation to intervene against the mandatory shift proposal, highlighting a lack of consultation with airlines.
