- The CEO allegedly used fake paperwork and third countries to bypass US export laws.
Federal agents arrested Greg Lui, 38, the CEO of Earthmade Computers, on charges related to the alleged smuggling of more than $300 million in restricted AI chips to China. The operation, which ran from 2023 to 2024, involved using fake documents and transshipment routes through countries like Malaysia and Singapore to circumvent U.S. export control laws.
Prosecutors allege that Lui and his co-conspirators facilitated the illegal export of high-end computer servers containing processors from companies like Nvidia. This advanced technology could significantly enhance the military capabilities of adversaries, posing a threat to U.S. national security. First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized the importance of preventing such technology from strengthening opposing military forces.
Lui allegedly used false paperwork to misdirect shipments, which were then re-exported to China. Evidence, including emails from January 2024, suggests Lui was aware of the illegality of his actions. He faces charges including conspiracy to violate the Export Control Reform Act, smuggling, and conspiracy to commit money laundering, with a potential sentence of up to 50 years imprisonment if convicted.
