Historic Mansion Gate Pillars to be Dismantled for Redevelopment
23 Feb
Summary
- Grade II listed gate pillars at Caversham Park will be temporarily removed.
- The former BBC site is being redeveloped for assisted living and new homes.
- Original materials will be retained and reinstated after construction.

The redevelopment of Caversham Park, a Grade II listed mansion formerly used by the BBC, will involve the temporary dismantling of its equally listed stone gate pillars. These structures on Peppard Road will be carefully taken down and stored on-site by Cotswold Natural Stone, working for developer Beechcroft Developments.
This is part of a larger plan approved in June 2024 to convert the mansion into assisted living flats and build additional homes on the wider site. The developers have committed to retaining, protecting, and reinstating original materials, ensuring no permanent alteration to the gate piers' historic significance.
Further plans for the Caversham Park site include a 64-bed care home. A Section 106 agreement, finalized on January 30, 2026, outlines financial contributions for infrastructure and designates parts of the site for community use, including sports facilities.
Historic England estimates the gate pillars date back to around 1850. While some developments may impact heritage assets, council officers previously stated the public benefits of new housing would outweigh the harm.
