Canadian Oil Soars Amid Global Diesel Scramble
3 Apr
Summary
- Synthetic Canadian oil prices tripled in days.
- It now trades at $19.25 per barrel over WTI.
- Global diesel markets disrupted by Hormuz closure.

Synthetic crude oil from Canada's oil sands has seen its price more than triple in a matter of days, driven by intense global demand for diesel fuel. This specially processed bitumen-derived oil is now valued at $19.25 more per barrel than the US benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, a significant shift from its previous discount.
The upheaval in diesel markets stems from disruptions to global energy flows, exacerbated by Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz and retaliatory attacks on energy infrastructure. European diesel futures have surpassed $200 a barrel for the first time since 2022.
Oil refiners in the Middle East and Asia are facing crippled diesel output as shipping disruptions limit their access to traditional crude supplies. Synthetic crude's favorable chemical composition and low sulfur content allow for higher extraction of diesel and jet fuel, making it highly sought after. Anticipated maintenance at some oil sands upgraders is also cited as a factor contributing to the premium pricing.
