Canada Taps Production for Global Oil Release
14 Mar
Summary
- Canada pledges 23.6 million barrels for IEA oil release.
- Release is largely met by planned production increases.
- Natural gas exports will also expand to aid allies.

Canada has committed to releasing 23.6 million barrels of oil from its domestic producers to support the International Energy Agency's (IEA) strategic stockpile. This contribution aligns with the IEA's decision to release a record 400 million barrels to counter price surges linked to the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
Energy Minister Tim Hodgson stated that Canada can meet its IEA commitment primarily through already planned production increases. The country does not maintain its own strategic oil reserve due to its status as a net crude exporter. The Canadian government has engaged with the oil and gas sector, which confirmed its ability to meet the target within the IEA's 90-180 day timeframe.
To further bolster supply, the government is exploring options such as delaying scheduled maintenance at oil sands facilities and encouraging refineries to use more domestic oil. Hodgson also announced that Canada's natural gas exports are set to expand in the upcoming months, offering additional energy support to international allies.
