Summary
- Business rates bill surged from £1,070 to £28,820 annually.

- Government to connect owner with Treasury over dramatic figures.
A family-run campsite in Cheddar, Somerset, is grappling with an unprecedented 2,700% surge in its business rates. Owner Jules Sayer of Petruth Paddocks reported that the annual bill has escalated from £1,070 to £28,820.
Sayer described the new bill as causing "untold worry," stating, "I haven't got that [kind of money] sat around." He had budgeted £10,000 for an expected increase but was unprepared for the magnitude of the actual hike. The campsite's local MP, Tessa Munt, raised the issue in the House of Commons.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds MP acknowledged the "dramatic figures," suggesting they might stem from a revaluation. He pledged to connect MP Munt with the Treasury. A HM Treasury spokesperson mentioned ongoing reforms to the business rates system, including a £4.3 billion support package to mitigate large overnight increases expected from the 2026 revaluation.
