This relocation comes after nine months of searching for a new home.
Launched in 2015, BeTheChangeYYC distributes critical supplies such as food, water, and harm reduction materials, while also connecting individuals with social programs and shelters. CEO Chaz Smith emphasized the importance of meeting people where they are to facilitate referrals to housing and mental health services.
The move signifies a financial shift for the organization, with an annual rent of approximately $25,000, a cost that Smith intends to cover from his salary. This is in contrast to their previous arrangement where the city subsidized their rent. The non-profit sector is facing increased pressure due to inflated costs, impacting the procurement of necessary supplies.
This relocation occurs as Calgary experiences a rise in its homeless population, with a point-in-time count in 2025 indicating an increase from the previous year. Smith also reported a surge in overdose responses encountered by their outreach teams. Previously, the organization operated from city-owned buildings known as Block 40, but received notice last year that they needed to vacate due to building renovations and safety concerns. The City of Calgary stated it is evaluating future options for these buildings.
