Summary
- BYD launched its first purpose-built electric mini car for Japan.
- The Racco is priced under 2 million yen after subsidies.
- BYD aims for 10,000 orders by the end of 2026.

BYD has officially entered Japan's highly competitive kei vehicle market, launching its first purpose-built electric mini car, the Racco. This move signifies BYD's ambition to accelerate sales in a segment where foreign automakers have historically faced significant challenges.
The new BYD Racco is positioned to attract buyers with a price point under 2 million yen, even after government subsidies. It boasts a respectable driving range of at least 210 kilometers on a single charge. The company has set an ambitious goal of securing 10,000 orders for the Racco by the close of 2026.
Kei cars constitute a substantial portion of Japan's automotive market, accounting for approximately one-third of new vehicle sales last year. This segment is a stronghold for domestic giants like Nissan, Suzuki, Honda, and Daihatsu. Despite these challenges, BYD sold about 7,400 vehicles in Japan through the end of 2025, following its entry into the passenger vehicle market in 2023.
