BYD Aims for Top Spot Without US Market
15 Jul
Summary
- BYD executive: US market not needed for global sales leadership.
- Company targets unseating Toyota as world's largest carmaker.
- Aggressive European expansion and charging tech drive strategy.

BYD's international operations head, Stella Li, asserts the company can surpass Toyota as the world's largest carmaker by sales, excluding the US market. This ambitious goal relies on organic growth and aggressive expansion, particularly in Europe.
Last year, BYD sold 4.5 million cars, significantly less than Toyota's 10.5 million. However, BYD's strategy does not depend on access to the US market, which remains restricted due to high tariffs and software regulations.
BYD is focusing on Europe, where it sees potential for higher profit margins on its electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company's market share in Europe more than doubled to 2.8 percent by May of last year, surpassing major competitors.
The company is investing nearly €2 billion to deploy 3,000 rapid charging stations across Europe by 2027. This infrastructure aims to support its premium brand, Denza, which recently unveiled the Z electric supercar, challenging established luxury marques.
