BSE Joins Nifty 50: A New Era for Indian Stock Exchange
30 Sep
Summary
- BSE shares will replace Wipro on the Nifty 50 index on September 30.
- Leveraged positions on BSE remained stable at ₹3,155 crore in late September.
- Macquarie initiated coverage on BSE with an 'outperform' rating and ₹4,000 target.

As of September 30, 2026, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is officially included in the Nifty 50 index. This inclusion, effective September 30, follows the bi-annual index rebalancing and marks a significant achievement for BSE, which went public nearly a decade ago. The exchange's shares will take the place of Wipro, a technology services provider that has been removed from the Nifty 50 for the first time since the index's inception. Wipro will now be part of the Nifty Next 50 index.
Analysts had projected potential inflows of $595 million for BSE due to its Nifty 50 inclusion, while Wipro's exclusion was expected to lead to outflows of over $152 million. Ahead of this transition, leveraged positions on BSE, recorded on the NSE's MTF book, showed stability. As of September 28, these positions totaled ₹3,155 crore, a slight decrease from ₹3,215 crore on August 31, suggesting consistent investor engagement. BSE's shares hold the second-highest exposure on the MTF book, closely trailing HDFC Bank.
Independent analysis from brokerage firm Macquarie, initiated on September 24, assigned an 'outperform' rating to BSE with a price target of ₹4,000. Macquarie identified BSE as 'The Challenger' to the NSE's 'The Dominator,' highlighting BSE's strategic pivot to index options as a key factor in its competitive standing. The firm's report also cited BSE's platform expansion and market share gains as drivers for revenue and margin growth, supporting strong cash generation. Macquarie expressed optimism regarding BSE's earnings growth, margin expansion, and platform optionality.
