Brampton Plant's Future Uncertain Amid Stellantis Plans
2 Jun
Summary
- Stellantis plans 11 new vehicles by 2030, but Brampton plant awaits confirmation.
- Brampton plant halted production in late 2023, leaving 3,000 workers idle.
- Jeep Compass production reassignment to Illinois fuels Canadian worker frustration.

Stellantis's announcement of 11 new vehicle launches by 2030 has reopened discussions about growth, but for Canadian autoworkers, uncertainty persists. The Brampton Assembly Plant, which ceased operations in late 2023 after ending production of the Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Chrysler 300, faces an unclear future. Approximately 3,000 hourly workers represented by Unifor Local 1285 are awaiting definitive news regarding potential production.
Initial plans involved retooling the Brampton facility for Jeep Compass assembly. However, Stellantis halted this work and subsequently reassigned the Compass production to its Belvidere, Illinois plant. This move has heightened concerns among the workforce, who are still without a confirmed product mandate for their plant.
During a May 21 investor presentation in Michigan, Stellantis outlined its ambition to increase North American revenue by 25 percent by 2030 and achieve 80 percent capacity utilization across its assembly operations. While these are ambitious goals on paper, they offer little immediate reassurance to the approximately 3,000 workers at the idle Brampton facility.
