Connectivity between the North and South banks of the Brahmaputra in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh has dramatically improved with the Bogibeel bridge, opened over seven years ago. This 4.94 km road-cum-rail bridge, located near Dibrugarh, was built at an estimated cost of ₹4,857 crore. Originally sanctioned in 1997-98, its foundation stone was laid in January 1997, with work commencing in April 2002. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the bridge on December 25, 2018.
The Bogibeel bridge has profoundly benefited districts in Arunachal Pradesh, including Anjaw and Lohit, by slashing road travel to Itanagar by 150 km and rail travel by 705 km. This enhanced accessibility has invigorated business activity in Dhemaji and spurred tourism in Arunachal Pradesh. Residents recall arduous journeys involving jeep rides and boat crossings before the bridge's completion.
Dibrugarh is experiencing a surge in real estate development and attracting students due to its status as an educational hub. The bridge has also stimulated retail financial activity, with increased visits from Arunachal Pradesh residents sourcing goods. Beyond economic benefits, the Bogibeel bridge is recognized for its strategic importance, facilitating the rapid movement of military personnel and equipment, thereby strengthening India's security in the Northeast.
