The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has concluded a twelve-year effort to reclaim four crucial plots in Mumbai's Parel-Sewri area. These lands, collectively spanning around 7,300 sq m, were originally designated for recreation grounds and a municipal school within the city's Development Plan. The retrieved plots measure 651.35 sq m, 2,010 sq m, 1,950 sq m, and 2,700 sq m.
The lengthy process involved resolving issues with thirteen tenants who occupied the land under the BMC's Vacant Land Tenancy (VLT) scheme. These tenants, residing on the plots prior to 1962, eventually vacated by June 9th. Rehabilitation efforts offered options for relocation or monetary compensation.
Six tenants accepted new tenements near Sasmira College in Worli. The remaining seven were allocated flats in newly constructed buildings at Jamshu Irani Chawl and Aga Khan Chawl in Byculla. While one plot was reserved for a municipal school, its function will now be integrated with the recreational space due to an existing civic school in the locality.
The successful retrieval marks the end of a significant administrative, legal, and rehabilitation challenge. With debris removal underway and the area being fenced, the reclaimed land is poised to serve the community, significantly enhancing recreational facilities in the Parel-Sewri vicinity.
