Pepper Prices Surge: Festival Demand Ignites Indian Spice Market
21 Oct
Summary
- Black pepper prices increased by ₹16 per kg due to festival season demand.
- Inter-state dealers and industry are covering raw material needs for contracts.
- Brazil offers pepper below $6,000/tonne, undercutting Vietnam's prices.

Black pepper prices have risen by ₹16 per kg in the last three weeks, largely attributed to robust domestic demand coinciding with the festival season and pre-Deepavali purchasing. Inter-state dealers and industries are actively covering their raw material requirements to fulfill forward contracts, which has led to a noticeable increase in procurement.
Sellers are holding back stocks, anticipating better returns, which is consequently slowing down supplies to the domestic market. While imports from Sri Lanka are augmenting domestic availability, global market dynamics are also at play. Brazil is currently offering pepper below $6,000 a tonne, making it more competitive than Vietnamese pepper, which is priced around $6,000 a tonne. Indonesian pepper is quoted at $6,500 a tonne, and Sri Lankan pepper at $6,800, in contrast to Indian pepper's parity of $7,825 a tonne.
With Indonesian and Brazilian crops entering harvest seasons, an influx of imported pepper is anticipated in the Indian market. Given India's strong domestic consumption and declining production, producing countries are eyeing the Indian market for potential sales. Future price movements will closely depend on domestic buying activity and overall demand leading up to Deepavali.
