BKR Capital has announced a significant milestone for its Fund II, successfully closing $20 million CAD with a target of $50 million CAD. This initiative is specifically designed to invest in burgeoning technology firms spearheaded by founders from the Black community.
The fund's investment strategy focuses on companies developing solutions for the evolving landscapes of work, daily life, and international connectivity. While primarily concentrating on the Canadian market, BKR Capital remains open to supporting select global companies, with average investments ranging from $250,000 to $1.5 million CAD.
Managing partner Lise Birikundavyi highlighted that Canada's demographic makeup, with a substantial portion of its Black population being first or second-generation immigrants, cultivates founders with an intrinsic ability to build globally from inception. This provides an early advantage in accessing international markets and scaling effectively.
Unlike some firms hesitant to openly emphasize diversity initiatives, BKR Capital views its mission as an "arbitrage investing" opportunity. Birikundavyi believes that expanding access to often overlooked founders surfaces high-quality deals. The firm launched in 2021 and previously raised $22 million for its Fund I. BKR Capital aims to complete its final close for Fund II by December and anticipates investing in approximately 25 companies.
