Gandhi Maidan in Patna buzzed with activity during the Bihar Saras Mela, drawing an impressive 80,000 visitors in its initial days and generating over Rs 1.5 crore in sales. This vibrant event provided a crucial platform for women from vulnerable backgrounds, fostering entrepreneurship through the display and sale of diverse handicrafts and culinary delights.
The mela featured 209 Jeevika Didis from Bihar's 38 districts alongside 76 women entrepreneurs from 24 other states, collectively operating over 500 stalls. Among them, Krishna Devi from Sheikhpura displayed her expensive Tanjore paintings, while Naocha, a handloom artisan from Manipur, offered winter garments, both sharing tales of their journey towards financial self-sufficiency.
Participants and visitors alike lauded the initiative for its direct market exposure, access to resources like loans and training, and the celebration of India's diverse crafts. The event underscored the growing success of self-help groups in empowering women and contributing to economic independence.
