Belfast Bikes Usage Plummets After Price Hike
4 Apr
Summary
- Belfast Bikes usage dropped over 25% between September and March.
- A year-long membership now costs £120, nearly five times the previous price.
- E-bikes are more popular than standard bikes in the revamped scheme.

Usage of the Belfast Bikes rental scheme has declined by more than 25% since its relaunch in September 2025. The revamped scheme, now operated by Beryl and featuring e-bikes, saw nearly 51,800 rentals between September 2025 and March 2026, compared to almost 69,500 in the same period the previous year.
Criticism has been leveled at the increased prices, particularly the year-long membership which now costs £120, a nearly fivefold increase. Belfast City Council attributes the usage dip to a transition period, reduced bicycle availability during installation, and the requirement for users to register new accounts with Beryl.
Despite the overall decrease, e-bikes have emerged as the preferred choice, recording nearly 29,900 journeys compared to over 21,900 for standard pedal bikes. The council expressed encouragement regarding new sign-ups and anticipates usage growth over the summer.
Advocacy groups highlight that pricing and a lack of robust cycling infrastructure are major barriers. Concerns about safety and a gender gap in users were also raised, with calls for improved active travel measures and more affordable, accessible schemes.
