11 Mar
Summary
- B.C. blueberries are being showcased in New Delhi's international food fair.
- The province aims to diversify exports beyond the U.S. market.
- Logistical challenges exist for shipping fresh berries to India.
British Columbia is actively promoting its prized highbush blueberries in India through participation in the AAHAR international food and hospitality fair in New Delhi. This initiative, led by the B.C. Blueberry Council, seeks to expand export markets beyond the United States, where approximately 87% of frozen B.C. blueberries are currently sent. The council aims for a more balanced export distribution, targeting 25% to other markets in the future.
The fair provides a platform to showcase frozen blueberries and their ingredient forms, such as powders and juice, aligning with discussions between Canadian and Indian leaders to enhance food security and resilient supply chains. India's growing economy presents a significant opportunity for B.C. products, with increasing interest in the health benefits and flavor of blueberries among younger Indian consumers.
While B.C. blueberries are valued at around $250,000 annually in exports to India, logistical hurdles for fresh berry shipments persist. The council is actively exploring new trade routes and will also promote berries in other Asian markets like South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and Singapore this year. Some B.C. farmers, facing climate challenges and rising costs, view market diversification as crucial for reducing risk and ensuring the sustainability of their operations.
