Bank Strike Alert: 5 Days of Disruption Ahead!

Bank customers should prepare for potential disruptions as bank unions have announced a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30. This upcoming strike, preceded by a one-day walkout on September 11, could effectively mean five consecutive days of limited banking services, especially when combined with the preceding weekend. State Bank of India has issued an advisory urging customers to complete urgent branch-related tasks in advance.

While essential services like ATMs and digital platforms such as the YONO app and UPI will remain available, customers needing staff-assisted transactions or those involving physical documents might face significant delays. The strike primarily impacts public-sector banks due to union participation, while private banks may operate with fewer interbank service interruptions.

The core demands driving this industrial action include the implementation of a five-day banking week, which unions claim was agreed upon in a March 8, 2024 settlement. Additionally, unions are protesting the Performance Linked Incentive scheme and are calling for its withdrawal or modification. Concerns regarding increased workloads, staff shortages, and unaddressed service issues are also cited.

Should the dispute remain unresolved, bank unions have warned of escalating action with an indefinite nationwide strike commencing on October 26. This further action could lead to prolonged disruptions in branch-based banking operations across the country.
