Debit Card Blocked Without Warning? Bank Liable!
5 Aug
Summary
- Banks must inform customers before blocking debit cards.
- Customer received Rs 1.25 lakh compensation for inconvenience.
- Fraud prevention cannot override customer notification duty.

A significant consumer court ruling has established that banks cannot block debit cards without prior notification to customers, even for fraud prevention. The Ernakulam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Kerala mandated Federal Bank to compensate a customer Rs 1.25 lakh.
This order followed the customer's international debit card being rendered unusable at Kuwait International Airport and upon arrival in Kochi in September 2021. He and his family faced considerable inconvenience and expenses due to the unexpected card blockage.
Federal Bank cited a Mastercard alert about suspected data compromise for blocking the card. They claimed an SMS notification attempt failed due to a technical issue. However, the commission found inconsistencies and held the bank liable for deficiency in service and unfair trade practice.
Legal experts emphasize that while banks must protect customers from fraud, timely communication is paramount. This ruling reinforces that customer convenience is integral to banking services, and failure to inform can lead to liability. Travelers are advised to carry multiple payment options and keep bank contact details updated.
