Automakers Pivot to Batteries: Energy Storage Surge
16 May
Summary
- Ford Energy to focus on battery storage systems for utilities.
- Ford's stock jumped 13% on the announcement of its energy unit.
- Rivals GM and Stellantis are also shifting to energy storage.

Automakers are strategically pivoting from traditional vehicle manufacturing towards energy storage solutions, a significant shift analysts believe could ease their transition to electric vehicles. Ford officially announced the spin-off of Ford Energy, a subsidiary dedicated to battery energy storage systems (BESS) intended for utilities, industrial clients, and data centers, with initial deliveries projected for late 2027.
This strategic move was met with strong investor confidence, resulting in a 13% surge in Ford's stock price. The company plans to repurpose production lines in Kentucky for this new venture. This pivot capitalizes on federal incentives for commercial battery storage, a stark contrast to waning support for EV sales. Ford CEO Jim Farley highlighted these storage systems as "high-margin opportunities."
Other major automakers are following a similar path. General Motors has partnered with Redwood Materials for battery recycling and energy storage, and is repurposing an EV battery plant in Tennessee for storage systems. Stellantis, in collaboration with Samsung SDI, has also begun producing energy storage batteries in Kokomo, Indiana, from a plant that was previously slated for EV batteries.
