Truck Loans Soar: $1K+ Payments Now Common
28 May
Summary
- Nearly 19% of new vehicle loans exceed $1,000 monthly.
- Most high-payment loans are for popular non-luxury trucks.
- Average loan amount and monthly payment are at all-time highs.

In the current automotive market, a substantial portion of new vehicle loans carry monthly payments exceeding $1,000. Data from the first quarter reveals that approximately 19% of new vehicle loans meet this threshold, a notable rise from the previous year. Contrary to assumptions that these high payments are solely for luxury vehicles, nearly 74% are associated with non-luxury models, with popular pickup trucks like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado leading the list.
This trend has accelerated in recent years, with loans over $1,000 previously accounting for a mere 5.4% of the market five years ago. The global chip shortage significantly impacted production, leading automakers to prioritize more profitable, higher-end models and driving up overall vehicle prices and borrowed amounts. Consequently, the average auto loan amount has reached an all-time high of $43,952, and the average monthly payment has also climbed to a record $770.
While auto loan delinquencies have seen a slight uptick, with 30-day late payments reaching 2% of new vehicle loans, rates remain below 2018 levels. Experts note that increased 60-day delinquencies are primarily concentrated within the subprime market, where borrowers with lower credit scores face a higher risk of default. Despite these concerns, many consumers appear to be adapting to these higher payment structures.
