Summary
- EV sales hit a record 157,957 in early 2026, up 117% year-on-year.
- EVs now represent one in four new vehicle sales, showing strong growth.
- Australia is on track to reach one million EVs on roads by next year.
Electric vehicle sales in Australia have surged to record highs, with 157,957 new EVs sold between January and June 2026. This represents a significant 117% increase year-on-year, with EVs now accounting for a quarter of all new vehicle registrations. The adoption is driven by households viewing EVs as a cost-saving measure, exacerbated by ongoing fuel price concerns.
As of June 2026, Australia's national fleet includes 612,000 EVs. Projections indicate the nation is on track to meet its target of one million EVs on the road by 2027. The Australian Capital Territory leads with 44% of new car registrations being electric, while Tarneit in Melbourne recorded the highest individual postcode uptake. National vehicle efficiency standards have also played a crucial role in increasing EV availability and competitiveness.
While electric cars and buses are experiencing robust growth, the uptake of electric trucks and vans remains below 1% of their respective markets. Charging infrastructure has largely kept pace with demand. Government policies, particularly in the federal ACT and NSW, are lauded, contrasting with perceived setbacks in South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory. The latter states have faced criticism for their support of fossil fuel transport options.
The Electric Vehicle Council is advocating for the extension of national vehicle efficiency standards beyond 2029 to align with broader emissions reduction goals. This policy has substantially increased the variety and price competitiveness of EVs, with nearly 200 models expected to be available in 2026. The council emphasizes the importance of electrifying commercial vehicles for energy security.
