Cyclone Halts Australian LNG Output
27 Mar
Summary
- Chevron's Gorgon and Wheatstone LNG facilities experienced outages.
- Tropical Cyclone Narelle likely caused production shutdowns.
- Production will resume once facilities are safe to operate.

Chevron is currently working to restore production at its Gorgon and Wheatstone liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Australia. These facilities experienced production outages, which are suspected to be linked to Tropical Cyclone Narelle. As of Friday, March 27, 2026, Chevron has not yet resumed full operations.
A spokesperson for Chevron Australia confirmed that an outage occurred at the Wheatstone Platform, located offshore Western Australia. Onshore gas production was suspended as a precautionary measure. Personnel had been demobilized from the platform ahead of the cyclone, and it was being operated remotely. Subsequently, one of the three LNG production trains at the Gorgon facility on Barrow Island also shut down.
These operational suspensions place additional strain on the global LNG market. Western Australia has seen several key iron ore and LNG ports close due to Cyclone Narelle, a category 3 storm. Chevron stated that full production would resume at both facilities once conditions are deemed safe.
