Australian Business Investment Dips, Future Spending Soars
27 Aug
Summary
- Business investment fell 3.6% in the June quarter, missing forecasts.
- Data centre construction spending significantly decreased last quarter.
- Companies raised future spending plans by 15.5% for 2027.

Australian private capital spending saw a notable decrease of 3.6% in the June quarter, reaching an inflation-adjusted A$50.95 billion. This decline fell short of market forecasts, which had predicted a modest rise. The primary driver behind this drop was a 53% reduction in spending on information media and telecommunications equipment.
This decrease followed a period of record investments in server racks and processing equipment for data centres in the previous quarter. Spending on plant and machinery also slid by 8.9%, though investment in buildings and structures saw a marginal increase of 2.1%. Despite the quarterly downturn, forward-looking data from an Australian Bureau of Statistics survey revealed that firms now plan to spend A$200.7 billion in the year to June 2027, marking a 15.5% increase from earlier estimates.
