AI Boom Fuels Inflation: RBA Faces Dilemma
8 Oct
Summary
- AI investment may increase inflation in the short term.
- Imported equipment for data centers mitigates some inflation.
- The RBA has raised interest rates multiple times in 2026.

Australia's burgeoning artificial intelligence investment is projected to drive near-term inflation, according to former Reserve Bank of Australia official Jonathan Kearns. He highlighted that productivity gains from AI are anticipated to materialize over a longer horizon.
Kearns estimated that approximately three-quarters of data center expenditures in Australia involve imported equipment, which would temper some of the inflationary impact. However, domestic spending associated with this investment will still contribute to aggregate demand.
Inflation in Australia accelerated in August, driven by rising fuel costs and widespread price pressures. In response, the RBA raised its cash rate for the fourth time in 2026 to 4.6% in September. Governor Michele Bullock has acknowledged the AI boom's role in escalating inflation.
Kearns anticipates the RBA will implement one additional interest rate hike this year. He suggested that AI investments are likely to remain resilient to higher interest rates as businesses pursue lucrative opportunities. Consequently, the burden of monetary tightening may disproportionately affect households, the exchange rate, and non-AI business investments.
Broader benefits of AI in the labor market are expected to emerge once businesses integrate the technology beyond routine tasks and fundamentally restructure their workflows.
