AstraZeneca has announced a multi-year collaboration with AI-powered drug discovery firm Insitro. This partnership aims to identify novel drug targets and design innovative treatments for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and cardiomyopathies, two complex diseases with significant unmet medical needs.
Under the agreement, Insitro will receive an upfront payment of $40 million. The company is also eligible to earn up to approximately $1.46 billion in milestone payments, in addition to potential single-digit royalties on future global sales. This positions the total potential value of the deal at around $1.5 billion.
Insitro will utilize its proprietary Virtual Human AI platform to unravel the underlying biology of these diseases and advance nominated targets. AstraZeneca will assume responsibility for all subsequent stages, including human testing, regulatory approvals, and bringing any resulting medicines to market globally. This collaboration highlights AstraZeneca's strategy to integrate advanced AI tools into its research and development processes to accelerate the discovery of novel therapies.
Both companies expressed optimism about the partnership. AstraZeneca cited the complexity of disease biology and the need for novel target selection, while Insitro emphasized the potential of high-content data and AI to uncover drivers for prevalent diseases like MASH and cardiomyopathies. This deal follows AstraZeneca's recent setbacks in these therapeutic areas, underscoring the continued pursuit of effective treatments.
