Production at the Jagiroad semiconductor plant in Assam is anticipated to begin within the current financial year, as announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This milestone follows discussions with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the facility's progress. The Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd. (TSAT) plant represents a substantial Rs 27,000 crore investment.
Designed to be a premier manufacturing site, the Jagiroad facility will utilize advanced packaging technologies to produce up to 48 million chips daily. It is set to serve critical sectors including automotive, electric vehicles, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. The project is also a significant job creator, with an estimated 15,000 direct and 11,000-13,000 indirect employment opportunities expected.
This initiative aligns with India's broader strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing and establish a robust domestic ecosystem. The plant's high-capacity output is intended to meet demands from both domestic and international markets, positioning India as a competitive player in the global semiconductor supply chain. Furthermore, training programs for young citizens in semiconductor manufacturing technologies are also progressing well.
