ASML's Chip Machines Fuel AI Revolution
28 Jul
Summary
- ASML dominates chip lithography machine manufacturing.
- Its machines are vital for AI chip production and data centers.
- The company faces Chinese competition and US export scrutiny.

ASML, a Dutch company, has ascended to become Europe's most valuable, largely due to its critical production of lithography machines. These sophisticated "chip printing" systems are indispensable for companies fueling the artificial intelligence boom and the global expansion of data centers.
The company's expertise lies in deep ultraviolet (DUV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. ASML holds a substantial market share in DUV machines, which are used for industrial and consumer electronics. Crucially, it possesses a monopoly in the cutting-edge EUV segment.
These EUV machines, costing approximately $200 million, are vital for manufacturing most AI chips and advanced memory chips currently in demand. ASML is also developing its next-generation "High NA" EUV tools, anticipated to be essential for future AI chip advancements within the next five years, with prices estimated between $350 million and $400 million.
ASML's technology involves massive, bus-sized machines operating at the nanoscale. They utilize lasers and advanced mirror systems to etch microscopic circuitry onto silicon wafers with extreme precision. The company delivered 48 EUV systems in 2025 and forecasts sales of 65 units this year, projecting 85 units for 2027.
Despite its market leadership, ASML navigates challenges, including emerging competition from China in its mid-range products and export controls imposed by the United States regarding shipments to China.
