Asahi Group is preparing to launch its Calpis dairy drink brand in India. This significant market entry is being facilitated through a franchise agreement with Varun Beverages, a prominent PepsiCo bottler in the region. The introduction of Calpis signifies Asahi's strategic move into India's non-alcohol, non-carbonated beverage sector.
The fermented milk-based drink is slated for release in the latter half of 2026 or subsequently. Consumers can anticipate two initial flavors: original and mango. These beverages will be offered in 180ml bottles with a retail price of Rs20 each. Asahi will provide product development and technical assistance, while its local subsidiary will manage marketing and brand oversight.
Varun Beverages, a key player established in the 1990s, will undertake the crucial roles of manufacturing, distribution, and sales. The company, which is PepsiCo's second-largest franchisee outside the US, operates numerous production facilities. This venture into the Indian market highlights Asahi's optimism about the country's vast population and growing non-alcoholic beverage sector, projecting substantial growth opportunities.
