3 Oct
Summary
- Arunachal Pradesh eyes major coffee cultivation expansion.
- Government to introduce dedicated policy for coffee sector.
- Focus on increasing productivity, bean quality, and farmer income.
Arunachal Pradesh is embarking on a renewed journey to enhance its coffee cultivation, productivity, and bean quality. Chief Minister Pema Khandu highlighted that despite coffee being present in the state for nearly five decades, its potential has not been adequately promoted.
The State Government is now committed to developing a dedicated policy intervention for the coffee sector, which has previously seen limited support. A delegation studied coffee cultivation models in other states, leading to the organization of a coffee workshop to equip growers with technical knowledge.
With only around 600 hectares currently under cultivation, Arunachal Pradesh aims to expand its coffee plantations. The diverse agro-climatic conditions provide a fertile ground for growth. The focus will be on increasing productivity, improving bean quality, and strengthening the value chain to enhance farmers' incomes.
Recognizing coffee as a promising avenue for young entrepreneurs, the Chief Minister pointed to the growing tourism sector as an opportunity for coffee-related businesses. The state seeks to capitalize on the emerging global market and health benefits associated with coffee consumption.
