Aerospace startups Archer Aviation and Anduril have partnered to develop an autonomous aircraft platform, aiming to reduce costs and accelerate commercialization. This platform is engineered for both commercial and military sectors.
Anduril introduced the defense-focused variant, dubbed Thunder, at the Farnborough Airshow. This rotorcraft is designed to operate alongside existing and future crewed military aircraft. Archer CEO Adam Goldman emphasized that the aircraft was purpose-built to meet identified defense needs.
Archer, primarily known for electric air taxis, intends to showcase its commercial version and announce its first clients later this week. The companies have conducted multiple test flights using surrogate aircraft, a key step towards validating essential systems. Thunder's maiden flight is anticipated in 2027.
