Appliance prices to soar: Raw materials surge 59%
20 Mar
Summary
- Raw material prices have surged by up to 59% in early March.
- Manufacturers face higher costs for plastics and polymers.
- Price hikes for appliances are expected this April.

Consumer durable manufacturers are experiencing intense cost pressures due to soaring prices for plastics and polymers. This situation is exacerbated by a weakening rupee and geopolitical instability in West Asia. As a result, leading appliance manufacturers have indicated upcoming price hikes for air conditioners, washing machines, and refrigerators, expected in April. Consumers can anticipate price adjustments of 3% to 10%, depending on the brand and model.
The immediate cause of these increased costs stems from higher crude oil prices and supply disruptions, which have driven up the prices of essential petrochemical derivatives like polypropylene and styrene monomer. These inputs are critical for appliance manufacturing. The impact is further amplified by rising freight costs, creating significant cost pressures throughout the value chain.
Electronics manufacturers, including those producing televisions, are also feeling the squeeze. Input costs for polymers and metals have climbed, with polymer-based materials seeing price increases of nearly 40-50%. Record-high copper prices and substantial spikes in ocean freight charges, alongside currency volatility, are contributing to escalating costs for the industry. Industry data from early March indicated a sharp increase in raw material prices, rising by as much as 59% in just over a week.
