Cook Praises China's Innovation Amid App Store Pressure

Apple CEO Tim Cook, speaking in Beijing, expressed strong admiration for Chinese developers and the advanced automation in the country's manufacturing facilities. He emphasized that Apple and China are aligned in pursuing objectives such as green development and carbon neutrality, reflecting a shared vision for progress. Cook noted the vital role of an "excellently talented developer community" in fostering prosperity across China and transforming its manufacturing sector through innovation. While Apple largely assembles its products in China, it is also diversifying its supply chain to locations like Vietnam and India. This visit occurred amidst ongoing discussions about Apple's App Store policies in China. The company recently reduced fees for developers in the lucrative market, a move seen as a concession possibly influenced by local regulatory pressures. However, there are indications that Beijing may continue to press Apple on its practices. During the holiday quarter ending in December, Apple experienced a significant sales rebound in China, with revenue climbing 38% to $25.5 billion. This growth was attributed to strong demand for the newest iPhone models and consumers switching from competing devices. At the same forum, Chinese Premier Li Qiang acknowledged Apple's diversified supply chain as a model. He cautioned against politicizing industrial matters and weaponizing supply chains, stating that such actions would increase costs and impede development momentum.
