18 Mar
Summary
- American Airlines is exploring a new widebody aircraft order.
- The airline seeks to improve its balance sheet with potential debt market tapping.
- Surging fuel prices have impacted the company's bottom line significantly.

American Airlines is planning a significant fleet expansion, with a focus on acquiring new widebody aircraft. This move is part of a broader growth strategy aimed at rejuvenating and enlarging the carrier's fleet for long-distance routes.
The airline is also exploring financial avenues to bolster its balance sheet. This includes potentially accessing the debt market as soon as next quarter and monetizing assets such as its fleet and loyalty program. Chief Financial Officer Devon May indicated that planned financing rounds in the third quarter might be advanced to the second quarter to meet incremental financial needs.
While American Airlines has successfully reduced its debt from over $50 billion to approximately $36 billion, it is now contending with rising fuel costs. The airline reported a $400 million increase in fuel expenses this month alone, prompting a revision of its expected adjusted loss per diluted share towards the lower end of its initial guidance.
Unlike some competitors, American Airlines is not currently planning capacity cuts. The carrier is also working to close the gap with rivals Delta and United in attracting premium leisure passengers by enhancing its business class product and onboard services.
Regarding fleet modernization, American Airlines operates Boeing 777 and 787 models and holds options for additional 787s. The company is also considering Airbus models, such as the A330neo and A350, for its long-haul operations. An order for new widebody jets is anticipated in the near future, with the fleet expected to be in excellent condition throughout the decade.
