Amazon Loses Bid to Quash $5.4B Lawsuits
26 Feb
Summary
- Amazon failed to dismiss two major lawsuits from retailers and consumers.
- The lawsuits total up to 4 billion pounds, or $5.41 billion.
- Cases allege Amazon abused its dominant market position for its own benefit.

Amazon has been unsuccessful in its latest effort to halt two major legal challenges brought by retailers and consumers. These lawsuits, collectively valued at up to 4 billion pounds (approximately $5.41 billion), accuse the e-commerce giant of abusing its dominant market position.
One of the significant cases was initiated by an academic on behalf of more than 200,000 third-party retailers. This action, with a potential value of up to 2.7 billion pounds, contends that Amazon unfairly manipulates its "Buy Box" feature and prioritizes products utilizing Amazon's logistics services.
Additionally, a separate lawsuit, valued at up to 1.3 billion pounds, was filed by consumer advocate Robert Hammond. This case represents millions of Amazon customers and asserts similar claims of dominance abuse against the company.
Amazon has maintained that these allegations lack merit and had sought to prevent the cases from proceeding. However, the Competition Appeal Tribunal had previously certified both cases on an opt-out basis. On Thursday, the Court of Appeal denied Amazon permission to appeal this decision, allowing the lawsuits to move forward.
