Summary
- NiSource and Amazon secured regulatory approval for data center power.
- The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved key agreements on June 23.
- NiSource will provide 400 megawatts of additional capacity for Amazon.

Amazon.com, Inc. is set to expand its data center infrastructure in northern Indiana following a critical regulatory approval. On June 23, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) gave the green light to essential agreements between NiSource Inc. and Amazon. This landmark decision supports a partnership aimed at powering new, large-scale data center developments.
The IURC's approvals encompass Amazon's special electric service contract and a power purchase agreement, clearing the final legal hurdles for Amazon's data centers to connect to the grid. NiSource confirmed that the regulator also sanctioned proposed generation resources to meet Amazon's substantial electricity needs.
This development builds upon previous agreements, including an April 16, 2026, expansion by NiSource to accelerate site energization. By June 5, NiSource had already augmented its capacity by 400 megawatts to accommodate Amazon's sites, demonstrating a progressive commitment to supporting the tech giant's infrastructure growth.
