Air New Zealand is set to revolutionize economy class travel with the upcoming launch of its innovative Skynest sleeping pods. These unique, bunk-bed-style pods will debut in November on the airline's lengthy flights between Auckland and New York. Passengers will have the option to book four-hour slots in a private Skynest pod for an additional $495, on top of their economy airfare.
The Skynest pods are designed to offer a lie-flat sleeping experience for travelers who typically fly economy. Each pod features a mattress, pillow, blanket, and essential amenities like USB charging ports. Initially available only on the Auckland to New York route, these pods signify a growing trend among airlines to offer premium comfort options to a wider range of passengers.
These new pods will be installed on new Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which will feature a reduced number of economy seats to accommodate the Skynest feature. Passengers will be able to reserve their nap times in advance, with online bookings opening on May 18 for travel starting in November. The airline also plans to allow in-flight bookings for remaining pod slots.
