Air India Chairman Takes Control Amidst CEO Uncertainty

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran has initiated weekly reviews at Air India, stepping in as the airline navigates leadership changes and business turbulence. Key departments, including flight operations, commercial strategy, and finance, are now submitting weekly progress reports directly to the chairman. This move aims to ensure stability during the search for a new chief executive officer.

Former civil aviation secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola has been appointed as an executive advisor to the chairman. His role is intended to support the management team and facilitate a smooth leadership transition. This intervention underscores the significance of Air India's multi-billion dollar turnaround strategy for Tata Sons, especially following its acquisition in 2022.

The airline has been grappling with significant challenges, including the aftermath of a fatal crash, increased operational costs due to geopolitical conflicts affecting flight routes, and delays in its interior refit program. The unexpected resignation of CEO Campbell Wilson occurs as the company strives to maintain momentum in its fleet expansion and service upgrades.

Uncertainty surrounding the CEO selection is reportedly impacting key business decisions and employee morale. Air India is also facing substantial financial losses, necessitating further funding infusions. The airline has reduced daily flights due to rising jet fuel prices and extended flight paths caused by airspace closures, impacting operational costs and fuel consumption.

Discussions are ongoing regarding the aircraft delivery pipeline, with potential capacity rationalization through the retirement of older, less fuel-efficient aircraft. Air India Express is also set to induct new aircraft.
