AI Boom: Investors Bet Big on Infrastructure in Q1 2026
16 May
Summary
- Institutional investors heavily bought AI infrastructure stocks in Q1 2026.
- Over 4,000 investors increased holdings in nine key AI infrastructure companies.
- Investors were selective with AI giants, showing more caution than conviction.

Institutional investors demonstrated a strong appetite for artificial intelligence infrastructure companies during the first quarter of 2026. Filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that more than 4,000 asset managers boosted or initiated stakes in nine major AI infrastructure players, including Oracle, Arista Networks, and Vertiv.
This strategic shift saw minimal selling, with only 146 investors divesting from the AI infrastructure sector. Concurrently, institutional buying was also robust in data center firms and utilities. Notably, no sellers were identified among utilities, while nearly 3,500 filers reported net purchases.
However, major AI players, referred to as the 'Magnificent Seven,' experienced a more divided investor sentiment. Uncertainty surrounding sustained AI spending and growth led to a slight edge for sellers over buyers among these tech giants. Palantir saw new investors like UAE's Mubadala Capital take positions.
Other technology sectors faced varied reactions. Software-as-a-service stocks, though facing disruption fears from AI, also saw significant institutional selling. Conversely, the semiconductor market experienced widespread buying, with over 4,100 investors increasing positions despite sharp share price rallies.
