AI Boom Strains Texas Grid, Risks Blackouts
25 Nov
Summary
- Data centers are increasing electricity demand, risking winter blackouts.
- Texas has over 400 data centers, with many new projects pending.
- NERC report highlights grid strain from growing industrial energy needs.

The burgeoning data center industry, fueled by the insatiable demand for AI services, is significantly straining power grids across the United States. Texas, in particular, is experiencing a substantial boom, hosting over 400 data centers with many more projects in development.
A new report from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) highlights that this "load growth" from data centers and other industrial users is driving higher winter electricity demand forecasts. This surge exacerbates the risk of supply shortfalls, especially during extreme weather conditions when electricity demand for heating also peaks.
Texas's grid operator, ERCOT, is expected to face reserve shortage risks during peak winter load hours. The sheer volume of proposed new data center projects, which if built could consume power equivalent to nearly 154 million homes, has raised skepticism, with many projects yet to undergo essential planning studies.
