AI Chip Boom Squeezes Smartphone & PC Markets
4 Nov
Summary
- AI demand is redirecting chip supply from PCs and phones.
- High-paying AI players, especially hyperscalers, get priority.
- AI servers consume more silicon, boosting advanced wafer demand.

The burgeoning artificial intelligence chip industry is significantly altering semiconductor supply chains, according to Siltronic CEO Michael Heckmeier. Demand for AI-related chips has become the primary growth driver for the industry, leading manufacturers to allocate more production capacity to these high-value applications. This strategic shift is consequently constraining supply for other end markets, notably smartphones and PCs.
Heckmeier explained that semiconductor companies naturally prioritize segments that offer the highest returns, with AI players, particularly hyperscalers, possessing the deepest financial resources. This dynamic means that even if other markets exhibit solid underlying demand, chip availability is limited. The trend is further amplified by the fact that AI servers require substantially more silicon area compared to traditional servers, thereby increasing the demand for advanced wafers.
While the current AI demand is robust, Heckmeier indicated that any moderation would not necessarily halt industry growth. He suggested that production capacity could then naturally flow back to sectors like smartphones and PCs, where demand remains strong. This suggests a potential for system balance, allowing overall growth dynamics to persist even with shifts in specific market demands.
