AI to Revolutionize India's Vehicle Scrappage
15 Sep
Summary
- AI can locate aging vehicles and automate compliance.
- Fragmented industry faces customer inconvenience and documentation issues.
- 98 million tonnes of steel recoverable from vehicles made between 2005-2023.

India's vehicle scrappage ecosystem faces significant hurdles, including documentation friction, an unorganized intermediary network, and a deficit in convenience for customers. Leaders from major automotive companies, speaking at the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) 2026 in Gandhinagar, identified Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the key technology to address these challenges and foster a cleaner sector.
AI algorithms can be deployed to identify aging vehicles, facilitate automated customer outreach, assist in tracking crucial documentation, and streamline government registry compliance. Furthermore, on-site AI systems can optimize inbound vehicle processing, manage component inventory, and analyze material compositions to enhance operational efficiency within Registered Vehicle Scrappage Facilities (RVSFs).
Experts also stressed the importance of integrating sustainability into product design from the outset. Data collected during the dismantling process, such as corrosion rates and the identification of reusable parts or hazardous substances, should be fed back into original equipment manufacturer (OEM) design loops. This feedback loop is essential for extending product longevity and refining material standards for future vehicles.
The current supply of recycled materials presents a constraint, with the entire year's scrap collection sometimes being consumed by just one component line. AI integrated across dismantling networks can provide real-time data on the quantity and quality of available recycled materials. An AI-integrated data backbone is proposed to connect vehicle owners, informal collectors, RVSFs, and automakers, fostering a compliant, closed-loop economy.
